What Is a HEIF File?

HEIF stands for High Efficiency Image Format. It is an image format standard developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) that produces smaller files than JPG while maintaining equal or better visual quality.

If you've heard of HEIC files from iPhones, HEIF is the parent standard. HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's specific implementation of HEIF using HEVC compression. In practice, .heif and .heic files are nearly identical — the difference is which compression codec is used inside the container.

While Apple popularized the HEIF standard through iPhones, other devices also produce HEIF files. Some Samsung Galaxy phones, Canon and Sony cameras, and Nokia devices save photos with the .heif extension. This converter handles all of them.
