Why Convert AVIF to PNG?
PNG is the go-to format when you need lossless quality and transparency support. While AVIF offers excellent compression, it isn't universally supported across all software and platforms. Converting to PNG ensures your images work everywhere while preserving full quality.
If your AVIF image contains transparency — common in logos, icons, UI elements, and product photos with removed backgrounds — PNG preserves that transparency perfectly. JPG cannot store transparency data and would fill transparent areas with a solid color.
PNG is also the preferred format for further image editing. Unlike JPG, PNG doesn't degrade with each save. If you plan to open the image in Photoshop, Figma, GIMP, or any other editor, PNG ensures you start with the best possible quality.
Web designers and developers who download AVIF assets from websites often need PNG versions for compatibility with older tools, email clients, or platforms that haven't adopted AVIF support yet.
When to Choose PNG vs JPG for AVIF Conversion
Both PNG and JPG are valid conversion targets for AVIF files. Here's when each makes sense.
| Scenario | Choose PNG | Choose JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Image has transparency | ✓ Preserves alpha channel | ✗ Fills with solid color |
| Further editing planned | ✓ No quality loss on re-save | ✗ Degrades each save |
| Screenshots with text | ✓ Sharp text, no artifacts | ✗ Text gets blurry artifacts |
| File size matters | ✗ 3-5x larger files | ✓ Much smaller files |
| Email attachment | ✗ May exceed size limits | ✓ Compact and universal |
| Social media upload | Works but larger upload | ✓ Smaller, faster upload |
| Print at large sizes | ✓ Best detail preservation | Good enough for most prints |
| Logos and graphics | ✓ Crisp edges, transparency | ✗ Compression artifacts on edges |
Choose PNG when the image has transparency, when you'll edit it further, or when it contains sharp graphics and text. Choose JPG when file size is the priority and you're just sharing photos.
Your Files Stay Private
All conversion happens in your browser using native AVIF decoding and the Canvas API. No files are uploaded to any server. No account required.
This is particularly relevant for designers working with confidential client assets or unreleased product images. Your files never leave your device.
