What Is a HEIC File?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads running iOS 11 or later. When you take a photo with your iPhone, it saves as a .heic file rather than the traditional .jpg format.

Apple adopted HEIC because it produces significantly smaller file sizes compared to JPG while maintaining the same image quality. A typical HEIC photo takes up roughly half the storage space of an equivalent JPG file. This means your iPhone can store nearly twice as many photos in the same amount of space.

The problem arises when you try to share HEIC photos with Windows users, upload them to websites that don't support the format, or open them in older software. Many platforms, email clients, and social media sites still require JPG format. That's where a HEIC to JPG converter becomes essential.

HEIC is based on the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). While Apple popularized the format, HEIC support is gradually expanding across operating systems and software. However, full universal compatibility is still years away, making conversion tools a necessity for most users.

HEIC vs JPG — Key Differences

Understanding the differences between HEIC and JPG helps you decide when to convert and when to keep the original format.

Keep your original HEIC files on your iPhone for storage efficiency. Convert to JPG when you need to share photos via email, upload to websites, use in documents, or send to someone on a Windows PC.

When Do You Need to Convert HEIC to JPG?

The most common situations where HEIC to JPG conversion is necessary include sharing photos with Windows users who cannot open HEIC files natively, uploading images to websites and online forms that only accept JPG or PNG, attaching photos to emails where the recipient's mail client may not render HEIC properly, and importing photos into software like older versions of Photoshop, Lightroom, or web-based editors.

If you're a photographer or content creator, you may also need JPG versions for client deliverables, portfolio websites, or print orders. Most professional printing services require JPG or TIFF format.

Windows 10 and 11 can technically open HEIC files with the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, but this doesn't solve the problem when you need to upload or share photos in a universally compatible format.

Your Privacy Matters

Unlike most online converters, this tool processes your photos entirely in your web browser. Your HEIC files are never uploaded to any server. The conversion happens locally on your device using WebAssembly technology.

This means your personal photos stay private. No one — not us, not any third party — ever sees or has access to your files. Once you close the browser tab, all processed data is gone.

This approach also makes the converter faster since there's no upload or download time for the actual conversion process.

Technical Details

This converter uses libheif compiled to WebAssembly to decode HEIC files directly in your browser. The decoded image data is then rendered to an HTML5 Canvas element and exported as a JPG file using the Canvas API's toBlob method.

The default JPG quality is set to 92%, which provides an excellent balance between file size and image quality. Pro users can adjust the quality slider from 1% to 100% depending on their needs.

EXIF metadata from your original HEIC files — including camera settings, date taken, and GPS location — can be preserved or stripped during conversion. By default, all metadata is preserved to maintain photo information.
